South African businesses can now consider ChatGPT Ads as a paid advertising channel. OpenAI named South Africa in its 21 October expansion announcement, with access through technology partners or self-service Ads Manager. The announcement was made on 21 October; the availability and budget guidance below were checked on 26 October.
For local owners and marketing teams, the immediate task is to understand the account and spending rules before approving a campaign. A daily budget is an average, reporting can lag, and creating an account does not establish that it can advertise.
What is available in South Africa
OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page lists South Africa as available for self-service access. The legal entity advertising and being billed must be based in an eligible country. Account registration and access are separate checks, so businesses should verify the position of the entity that will actually pay.
The launch announcement says ads appear on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. They are labelled and separate from answers. OpenAI also says advertising does not influence those answers and conversations are kept private from advertisers. Buying an ad therefore should not be presented as buying an organic recommendation or citation.
Read the budget as an average
OpenAI's campaign creation guide lists a minimum daily budget of R83 for accounts billed in ZAR. That is a minimum budget setting, not the full cost of a campaign or a forecast of what a lead will cost. Confirm billing details and any applicable taxes before approving spend.
The daily budget rules allow spend of up to twice the selected daily budget on one day. Across the applicable budget week, the limit is seven times the daily amount, subject to proration when budgets change. The week runs from Sunday to Saturday in the ad account's timezone.
For illustration, an unchanged R100 daily budget could permit R200 of media spend on a single day and R700 over a full budget week. This is an explanation of the limits, not a recommended budget or performance forecast. Changing a budget during the day also matters: that day's maximum uses the highest daily budget active at any point that day. Changes during the week affect the prorated weekly limit.
OpenAI describes a campaign-total budget as the stricter control for total spend. If a business approves a fixed test amount, it should compare that option with the potential exposure under daily budgeting before publishing.
Check when spending can begin
Ads created during signup can begin delivering after approval when billing, account readiness and campaign settings allow it. OpenAI's billing guidance also says spend reporting may be delayed by seven to eight hours. A zero spend figure on the dashboard is therefore not proof that no charges are accruing.
Do not use publication as a way to explore settings. OpenAI warns that first-campaign scheduling options may not appear before publication, and ads could run before a later start date is set.
There are two further details to check in the same guide. Some new self-service accounts can initially target only their home country. A Conversions objective also does not mean payment per conversion: billing can still be based on valid clicks or impressions.
A practical checklist before approval
For a South African service business or retailer, a useful first review should cover these questions:
- Is the advertising and billing entity eligible, and does the account have access for the intended location? Check the actual settings rather than assuming a successful registration settles this.
- Are the billing currency and account timezone understood? Record the selected budget type and the maximum total exposure the person paying has approved.
- Is there one clear offer for a defined service area or delivery market? Keep the first proposal focused enough that the resulting enquiries can be assessed against a specific business need.
- Does the landing page explain the offer and provide a working contact or purchase route? Check forms, phone links and the confirmation experience before paying to send visitors there.
- Is measurement ready, and who will review enquiry quality? Agree what counts as a qualified enquiry, booking or sale instead of judging the campaign only by clicks.
These are preparation steps, not evidence that ChatGPT Ads will outperform an existing channel. Any test should have a named owner and a review point based on the business's normal sales process.
What this changes for local marketers
Symaxx's June article on product feeds and multi-advertiser tests focused on emerging formats and preparation. The October announcement adds confirmed South African availability, making account eligibility and spending controls an immediate planning question.
The sensible next step is a documented campaign proposal with a clear offer, a checked destination and an approved spending limit. Keep established campaigns running on their own evidence, and assess this additional channel through qualified demand rather than launch-day enthusiasm.
